What to expect on your wedding day

There is something rather lovely about painting people while they are celebrating.

At a wedding, people have made an effort. They have chosen the dress, found the shoes, perhaps bought a new tie, had their hair done, and arrived ready to celebrate two people they care about. And then, for a few minutes, I have the privilege of observing them closely enough to capture a little of who they are — in watercolour.

That is the idea behind live wedding guest portraits: small, original artworks created for your guests while your wedding is taking place.

Unlike a traditional live wedding painting, where an artist may work on one larger artwork depicting the couple, venue or a particular scene, live guest portrait painting creates a collection of individual artworks throughout the event. Each becomes a personal wedding keepsake that your guest can take home.

If you are considering a live wedding guest portrait artist for your wedding in South Africa, here is what you can expect when Lida La Luna Art joins you on the day.

Do guests have to sit still while I paint?

Fortunately, no.

I don't expect anyone to sit perfectly still in front of me while I paint for half an hour. This is a wedding, after all, not an eighteenth-century portrait sitting.

Instead, I work from a photograph taken on the day. Guests can therefore return to the celebration while I paint. The photograph gives me a visual reference for clothing, hair, posture and those small details that help make a person recognisable.

The intention is not to create a highly detailed or photorealistic portrait. My watercolour wedding guest portraits are playful, expressive interpretations of the people in front of me. I want to capture an impression of the person and something of the occasion.

What do Lida La Luna watercolour guest portraits look like?

I paint in my own style.

That sounds obvious, but I think it is worth saying because live wedding portrait painting can mean very different things depending on the artist.

My approach is loose, light and expressive. Watercolour naturally brings softness and movement to the work, while ink allows me to suggest shape, clothing and character without describing every tiny detail.

I am interested in recognisability, certainly, but not photographic accuracy.

A hand-painted portrait contains interpretation. I decide which lines matter, where colour is needed and where the white of the paper should simply be left alone. Some marks are deliberate; others are the happy result of watercolour behaving like watercolour.

That individuality is part of what makes each little painting an original.

Live painting becomes part of the wedding experience

One of my favourite parts of being a live wedding artist is watching people become interested in the process.

There is usually a point when someone wanders over simply to see what I am doing. Then another person arrives. Someone recognises the guest I am painting. A friend calls somebody else over. Before long, people begin returning to see which portrait is next.

I rather enjoy that curiosity.

We encounter thousands of finished images every day, but we don't often have the opportunity to watch something being made by hand from beginning to end.

Live guest portrait painting therefore becomes more than a wedding favour. The creative process itself becomes part of the wedding experience — something guests can watch, talk about and participate in.

There is conversation, observation and usually quite a bit of laughter around my table.

How many wedding guests can be painted?

Live guest portraits are handmade, and handmade things take time.

The number of portraits I can complete depends on the length of the booking and whether I am painting individuals or couples. For that reason, I prefer to discuss the practical expectations with the couple beforehand rather than promise an unrealistic number on the day.

I would much rather create a collection of portraits that still feels like my work than turn the process into a race against the clock.

For larger weddings, we can discuss the available options in advance so that you know exactly what to expect.

A wedding favour that is actually personal

Perhaps this is the part I like most.

A guest arrives at a wedding expecting the usual things: good food, conversation, music, photographs and, hopefully, a very happy couple.

They probably don't expect to leave carrying a little original artwork of themselves.

A hand-painted guest portrait is both a personalised wedding favour and a memory of having shared in your celebration. Each portrait belongs to an individual guest, but it is also connected to the larger story of the wedding day.

And because every portrait is painted individually, no two are exactly alike.

For me, that is the real appeal of live wedding guest portrait painting. It brings together several things I value enormously: observation, creativity, human connection and the simple pleasure of making something by hand.

For a few minutes, amongst all the movement of a wedding day, I get to stop and really look at a person.

Then I pick up my brush and paint what I see.
